SWAN HILL UNITING CHURCH FABRIC ART GROUP
Fabric art Group Meets Wednesday 10am – 12pm at the Uniting Church Hall, Swan Hill. (except 3rd Wednesday). We start with a cuppa, planning our activity, then with drawings, scissors, pins and fabric we ‘create’.

We were motivated by an exhibition of the Traralgon Uniting Church Fabric art group whose works were featured at the Swan Hill Anglican Art Show.

Some of our group attended a workshop to hear how to use fabric and pins on styrene foam boards, and as a group, form ideas to create a wall hanging to display in our church.

Inspired, we formed our group. There a currently thirteen completed pieces, all of which have been inspired by a biblical theme or social issue and these are rotated according to the appropriate liturgy of the day or the season.

Each member of the group contributes in their own way and we have all grown from our activities which stimulate thought, discussion, debate and creativity.

Come and join us!!

SWAN HILL UNITING CHURCH COMMUNITY ISSUES GROUP
The Swan Hill Uniting Church Community Issues Group is a community group under the auspices of the Uniting Church. We have been working to support refugees and asylum seekers since 2001, firstly with men from Afghanistan and then 6 years later with their families.

A second wave of Hazara asylum seekers began in 2012 coming to Australia by boat via Indonesia, and then to Swan Hill. This current group numbers estimate from 50 a 100 men who are all Bridging Visas or Permanent Visas.

Our activities include Welcome Nights, ‘English as a Second Language’ for women, bus and train trips to various rural communities, and forums providing essential information in such things as fire, health, road laws, use of local utilities. We provide some personal support and advocacy by writing supporting letters. Bus trips to rural towns are a great exercise in helping people understand the plight of these people. Local refugee support groups in these towns welcome the visitors enthusiastically. We also fund driving lessons and give household support when needed.

We need to constantly source funding for these projects. Financially we struggle to obtain grants to support these activities. The provision of driving lessons , which are absolutely essential for newcomers are very expensive. Last year, in 2 months we would have paid out nearly $2000 for the lessons. Individual generosity is gratefully received.
